SPRECKELS JUNCTION, Monterey County — October 2026. The Salinas River’s historical flood record includes a severe January 1952 event in which water spread into Spreckels Junction and closed a road crossing. Monterey County’s Water Resources Agency reproduces a Salinas Californian account dated January 16, 1952 reporting evacuations by boat of several families in the junction area and on Salinas’s East John Street.
What does the record say?
The old report describes a river swollen by six days of rainfall and says the Salinas–Monterey Highway bridge was closed. At the time, the newspaper predicted the crossing might reopen the next day, but the quote does not document when it actually reopened. This was a historic emergency, not a current closure.
Why preserve the story?
The county’s historical-flood compilation shows how extreme runoff has affected transportation and neighborhoods in the Salinas Valley. A documented 1952 flood offers context for local planning, but it does not establish the flood status or flood probability of a particular address in 2026. Conditions, levees, roads and land use have changed.
Current safety information is separate
For an active emergency, residents should use Alert Monterey County, National Weather Service alerts and current county transportation information. Homeowners evaluating property-specific risk should consult official floodplain maps rather than rely on historical news descriptions alone.

Editorial note: Boat evacuations and bridge closure refer to January 1952. No evacuation or flood in October 2026 is asserted.
